Arthur awarded $818,414

R. Martin Arthur, Ph.D., the Newton R. and Sarah Louisa Glasgow Wilson Professor of Engineering, has received a three-year, $818,414 grant from the National Cancer Institute for research titled “3D Noninvasive Temperature Estimation with Ultrasound.”

Efimov awarded $100,000

Igor Efimov, Ph.D., the Lucy and Stanley Lopata Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, has received a one-year, $100,000 research contract from Medtronic Inc., for his study “Understanding Defibrillation Mechanisms Using Optical Mapping.”

Ory awarded $200,000

Daniel Ory, M.D., associate professor of medicine, has received a three-year, $200,000 grant from the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation for research titled “Treatment of Niemann-Pick C (NPC) Disease Through LXR Activation.”

Silva wins first place at Gordon Research Conference on Cardiac Arrhythmia Mechanisms

Jonathan Silva, a doctoral student advised by Yoram Rudy, Ph.D., the Fred Saigh Distinguished Professor of Engineering, won first place in the research competition at the Gordon Research Conference on Cardiac Arrhythmia Mechanisms, held Feb. 20-25 in Buellton, Calif. The title of his poster was “Molecular Interactions Determine Effects of Iks on the Cardiac Action Potential: Modulation by KCNE1 and Chromanol 293b.” Other biomedical engineering students from the Cardiac Bioelectricity and Arrhythmia Center received recognition in this meeting, including Crystal Ripplinger (Igor Efimov lab; second place) and Subham Ghosh (Rudy lab; third place).

Kovacs receives Faculty Mentor award

The Graduate Student Senate presented its Sixth Annual Faculty Mentor Awards on April 6 in the Women’s Building to seven deserving individuals. Sandor Kovacs, Ph.D., M.D., associate professor of medicine and of physiology was one of the seven recipients.

Philip V. Bayly, Ph.D., was installed as the first Lilyan and E. Lisle Hughes Professor in Engineering March 8 in Uncas A. Whitaker Hall for Biomedical Engineering.

R . Gilbert Jost, M.D., the Elizabeth Mallinckrodt Professor and head of radiology, has been named chairman of the board of directors of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Faculty members receive promotions, tenure

At recent Board of Trustees meetings, the following members of the Cardiac Bioelectricity and Arrhythmia Center (CBAC) were granted tenure, promoted with tenure, appointed with tenure or granted a track change with tenure effective July 1, 2004, unless otherwise noted:

•Jianmin Cui, as associate professor of biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science
•Igor R. Efimov, as associate professor of biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science
•Yoram Rudy (CBAC Director), as the Fred Saigh Distinguished Professor of Engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, effective Sept. 1, 2004

O’Sullivan installed as Sachs professor of electrical engineering

Joseph A. O’Sullivan, Ph.D., professor of electrical and systems engineering, was installed as the Samuel C. Sachs Professor of Electrical Engineering in a Dec. 13 ceremony in Uncas A. Whitaker Hall for Biomedical Engineering.

Saigh Foundation provides gift for distinguished professor; Yoram Rudy installed as initial holder

Yoram Rudy, Ph.D., professor of biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, and Director of the Cardiac Bioelectricity and Arrhythmia Center was installed as the inaugural Fred Saigh Distinguished Professor of Engineering in a ceremony Nov. 22 in Uncas A. Whitaker Hall for Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.
